Hirst began making his spot paintings while still a student at Goldsmith College, London, in the late 1980s. The spots are nearly always painted the same size and shape. Spots Car Painting is Hirst’s first collaborative painting, and he has also painted spots on an actual car. this work was painted for the Aids charity, Crusaid. Paul Simonon painted the Citroen car. Simonon was an art student in the mid-1970s before leaving to establish the punk band, The Clash (for which he played bass guitar).
